Karly Norman is an occupational therapist with lived experience of complex wounds, multiple surgeries, autism and mental health. My own healthcare journey has shaped a strong understanding of what it can mean to experience significant distress while not necessarily expressing that distress in ways healthcare professionals expect. As an autistic person, I have experienced being misunderstood and having the severity of my internal experience questioned or overlooked because of how I presented externally. I brings this lived experience to the AWSA Summer School to explore the psychological impact of wounds, the complexities of the patient experience, and the importance of looking beyond outward emotional presentation when understanding distress.
